RECYCLING BIOSOLIDS
TO LAND

Best in Class Service for Utility Companies

At O J Neil Contracting, we are experts in the recycling of biosolids for the water industry and have the experience, technical know-how and machinery to deliver a best in class service.

We currently work with two of the largest water companies in the UK, Thames Water and Anglian Water, and can spread more than 10,000 tonnes of biosolids per day.

Operating from Swindon in the west to the Dartford Crossing in the east, we have become industry leaders in wastewater management. We have developed a very specialised recycling operation and have substantial experience working with large organisations and delivering the asset management plans of water companies.

Why Recycle Biosolids to Land?

The application of biosolids to agricultural land is recognised as the best practice environmental option by the UK government and the EU. The use of biosolids puts nutrients back into the land as well as improving soil structure, reducing the amount of manufactured fertiliser,  making it beneficial both to the environment and agriculture.

The water industry produces more and more biosolids every year and is increasing its reliance on recycling biosolids to agriculture – and that’s where we can help. We recycle more than 375,000 tonnes of biosolids to land for Thames Water alone. We always follow The Safe Sludge Regulations and the Code of Practice for the Agricultural Use of Sewage Sludge to ensure an outstanding job every time.

How We Can Help

We deliver a comprehensive and proven range of biosolid to land recycling services. We take great pride in delivering a first-class service to all of our customers and already have long-term partnerships in place with leading utility providers. Here’s how we can help you:

  • Loading – We load and collect biosolids from wastewater sites. Utilising the latest low emission  rigid and articulated HGVs.
  • Trackway – Using our own heavy-duty Dura-Base trackway enables 24/7 365 service, regardless of the weather.
  • Stockpiling – We use our fleet of Volvo and Hitachi 13-tonne excavators and specially built sludge buckets to stockpile biosolids for utility companies and haulage providers.
  • Spreading – Our fleet of self-propelled spreaders apply biosolids to the land accurately and evenly. Our excavators can load even the wettest stockpiles safely without causing damage to the land. We can also apply odour control products to minimse the environmental impact.

THE TREATMENT PROCESS

Treated sewage sludge, also known as biosolids, has been recycled to agricultural land for many decades in the UK, Europe, the USA and other parts of the world. In the EU it is recognised as the Best Practicable Environmental Option (BPEO) in most circumstances, adding plant nutrients and humus-forming material to enrich the soil, and is supported by the UK Government and European Commission.
